Annual well woman exams
Visiting your doctor every year for a well woman exam is an important part of maintaining your overall health. An annual gynecological exam can provide early detection of many serious health conditions and help provide you and your family with peace of mind regarding the state of your health.
Your annual exam will cover basic medical information such as your weight and blood pressure, a physical examination including a breast exam and a pelvic exam, a pap smear, and screening for human papillomavirus (HPV). Your annual exam is an excellent opportunity to discuss any health care concerns with your doctor.
Pap smears
A Pap test, often called a Pap smear, is used to identify changes in the cells of the cervix that could lead to cancer. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women start having Pap tests at the age of 21. Women under 30 should have a Pap test every 2 years. Women over 30 can have a Pap test every 3 years, unless they have certain risk factors such as a history of cervical dysplasia or are infected with HIV. Talk to your doctor to determine the best treatment plan for you. Even if you do not need an annual Pap test, you should still see your health care provider for well-woman care and to discuss any other medical concerns.
Human Papillomavirus screening
The main cause of cervical cancer is a virus known as human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that is often cleared quickly by a woman’s immune system. However, in some cases, the virus persists and causes changes in cervical cells that can lead to cancer.
